Black-owned businesses are suffering because of a lack of access to credit.

According to the 2014 U.S. Census Bureau’s first Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, Black business owners are three times as likely as Whites to say they need financing, but choose not to apply for it.

Fifty nine percent of Black business owners say they don’t apply for loans out of the fear of not being approved. The fear is justified. Only 47 percent of Black business owners get the full amount they requested versus 76 percent of Whites.

Ron Busby, President and CEO of the U.S. Black Chambers, and Michael Grant, President of the National Bankers Association, joined Roland Martin on NewsOne Now to discuss the Black business credit gap and what can be done to close it.

African-American entrepreneurs own more than 2.6 million firms and are building some of the nation's brightest, innovating, and fastest-growing companies. Black Enterprise publishes an annual list, BE 100s, which ranks America’s largest black-owned companies, including automobile dealers, banks, asset managers, investment banks, and private equity firms. Black Enterprise’s list is universally recognized as the most authoritative analysis and annual ranking of the nation’s highest earning black-owned companies.

And when and where you can, support Black-owned businesses because money equals power. And by supporting black-owned businesses, African American consumers are exerting an enormous amount of power to develop black economic dominance… power to create new jobs within our community, and power to build generational black wealth.

Former President Thabo Mbeki believes the fragmentation of the voice of Black business is making it impossible to achieve economic emancipation. Mbeki says new business leaders in black communities need to emulate people such as Dr. Sam Motsuenyane if the ideal of a truly liberated South Africa is to be realised.
The former President was speaking to the SABC ahead of an event to honour the man regarded as the father of Black Business, Dr. Sam Motsuenyane, who led the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry, NAFCOC for 24 years.

African-American men and women spend billions of dollars on their hair, but U.S. beauty care companies are missing out.

Mintel values the black hair care industry at more than $2.5 billion, but that statistic doesn't include products such as hair accessories, wigs or electric styling products. So, the industry is actually worth much more.

Most hair care products purchased by African-Americans are imported from countries such as India and China, despite the U.S. having one of the most lucrative hair care markets in the world.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC

Imagine rolling 20-30 deep to a spot, stopping rush hour traffic, making the streets a spectacle, and overwhelming security to the point where they don’t even try to stop you. That’s just another day skating with Gangcorp where everyday is Go Skateboarding Day (before it became a marketing shitshow).

The crew, bred in LES skatepark has only grown in numbers since we met them and recently released a full length video, Black Business which showcased strength in numbers and proved that New Yorkers can skate handrails and stairs too. (They don’t only have to hit wallrides and bump to bars.)

The Gang Corp guys are also great collectors of pedestrian hijinx, and this edit is the first in a series of raw tapes from Black Business we’re releasing that offers a look into their “artistic process” (i.e. catching people humping mailboxes, finessing security guards, and losing their shit whenever someone lands a trick).

Tune in over the next few weeks for more raw tapes which may or may not include bonus clips from Mark Suciu and Franky Spears too. (For the culture.)
